The Best Options for Double-Duty Murphy Beds with Desks
SHOP DESK BEDS

Does your guest bedroom need a studio wall bed with a desk surface where you can enjoy entertainment, productivity, and working from home? Do you wish that you, someone in your home, or a guest could sleep in a comfortable bed, then put that bed into a Murphy bed-style wall space and start the day working, enjoying comfortable screen time, or other leisurely activities without having to leave the room? It may sound like a tall order, but fortunately, at Wilding Wallbeds, we pride ourselves on high standards and exceptional work.

We’re experts at all things Murphy beds and wall beds (here is a useful video if you’d like a breakdown of what distinguishes one from another), and one of the top wall bed suppliers in America. Many would say that we’re the best wall bed supplier in America, but the results speak for themselves, as do our many happy customers. We were founded in 1997 by the father-son team of Bob and Dennis Wilding and are a family-owned and largely family-run company built on industry innovation, integrity, and hard work.

You’re in the best place for a studio desk wall bed that can be a hub for rest, productivity, or entertainment. There are 3 categories of wall beds in the Wilding Wallbeds catalogue that feature desks: the Murphy Bed Drop Down Table, the Studio Desk and the Murphy Desk Bed.

1. The Murphy Bed Drop Down Table

Let’s start with the simplest option: the Murphy Bed Drop Down Table, which can come in 12 different styles and 2 colors for the locks: bronze or black. These are the compatible styles: Dakota, Remington, Newport, Park City, Edge, Scape, Avery Park, Brittany II, Presidential, Mission Street, Hampton, and Cape Cod. This elegant yet straightforward product comes in these styles, but note that our Bookcase Wallbeds and Murphy Frames cannot include the drop down table, due to sizing limitations. You can also choose between 4 different types of wood: Oak, Cherry, Alder, and Mahogany, allowing for lots of customization.

The bed is in the standard layout for a Murphy bed, with the sleeper laying with their head perpendicular to the wall. In other words, they will face away from the bed with the top of the wall bed above them.

Two straightforward “thumb-slide” locks hold the desk folded up and snug in place, one lock at the top and one at the bottom, conveniently placed high enough from ground level so that the little hands of children won’t be able to reach them and accidentally unlock the table surface.

The desk surface is 36-48 inches long and 30 inches wide, depending on which options are selected, coming in one streamlined design. It’s a wall bed with a pair of connected planks that, when released, can be unfolded into a table. Click here for more information on our rates and options. The bottom lock releases the leg, and the top lock releases the top. When fully extended, this tabletop surface is the perfect size for writing letters, reading, working from home on a laptop or other devices, putting together a puzzle, and more. Next, let’s take a look at the Murphy Desk Bed.

2. The Murphy Desk Bed

The Murphy Desk Bed includes a sturdy desk surface with the color and style of your choosing, with subtle pistons that allow for it to simply pull up when you need the desk, and fold down below the bed surface when you need the bed. You simply need to unlock it by pushing in the locks on the top space of the bed frame, which releases it. Then you can unfold the bed, and the desk surface will always be parallel to the floor even as it is moving.

Unlike with the Murphy Bed Drop Down Table, the sleeper will rest with their head parallel to the wall. Customers with this option enjoy 17 inches of clearance and plenty of space for a laptop or desktop computer, a coffee cup, and even a printer or small tv screen or secondary monitor. The accommodating Murphy Desk Bed will allow for plenty of personalization, with a spacious desk surface. Devices won’t slide off when the desk surface is moved, provided there is room for the bed to unfold above them when converted into the bed, though we encourage keeping the weight on the surface at 40 pounds or under. These are the options for the add-ons: a Light Bridge, a removable Pillow Guard plank that goes on the top of the bed space near the person’s head, side cabinets, a power outlet, and a special mattress for your Murphy Bed. The Light Bridge is a fun option for reading while in bed.

These Murphy Desk Beds come in the Full, Queen, and Twin sizes, and these styles: The Bristol, The Nova, The Springfield, The Craftsman, The Tahoe, The Tucson, and The Legacy. The next step is to choose the type of wood that will match best with this guest room and best meet your needs. For example, the Nova Murphy Desk Bed comes in Natural/Mahogany, Grand Harbor/Mahogany, Natural/Oak, White/Paint Grade, Black/Paint Grade, Desert Sable/Alder, Driftwood/Oak, Midnight Blue/Paint Grade and Sandstone Gray/Paint Grade.

Once you’ve chosen the size, style and type of wood for your Murphy Desk Bed, and decided whether to purchase the add-ons, choose from one of our partnered Serta mattresses, or other brands for the perfect fit. Each mattress is categorized by Comfort, Support, and Quality. Our mattress options are designed to suit your needs and can come in Full, Twin, or Queen size, corresponding to the size of the wall bed that’s chosen. Finally, we’ve arrived at the Studio Desk, the third option for a desk wall bed that’s sure to add personality, function, and the best use of space to your guest room.

3. The Studio Desk Bed

The Studio Desk doesn’t have quite as much clearance area as the Murphy Desk Bed sitting at about 9 inches instead of 17, but it comes in the Queen, King, Twin or Full size. As with all 3 options, it features a simple layout but instead of lock switches or “thumbs-slide” locks, it has conventional handles that are part of the bed frame. Power Outlets are unfortunately unavailable for the Studio Desk, as are the Light Bridge and Pillow Guard. There’s about 5 feet by 2 feet of desk space in this model and it comes in most of the Wilding Wallbeds Studio styles. The Studio Desk can also be purchased with or without cabinets on both sides of the bed.

In order to engage the bed, simply pull it down towards the floor and after it’s fully set, move the rotary floor bed hinge to the engaged position beneath it. This motion will move the desk surface below, but the items on its surface will stay put, just like with The Murphy Desk Bed. Like the Murphy Bed Drop Down Table, The Studio Desk will have the sleeper lay with their head perpendicular to the bed, or oriented facing outward from the wall. To hide the bed and re-engage the desk, simply rotate the floor bed hinge back into the upright position, and carefully push the bed back up to the top, using its wooden frame.

What Makes a Wilding Wallbed special?

Well, we feature a proprietary plywood that is layered for durability and longevity. It was created to last, and it always does. Wilding Wallbeds customers are happy customers. Our first wall bed, built in St. George, Utah in 1997, is still used by our first customer.

We are our own supplier, and manufacture every Wilding Wallbed in our own factories, avoiding the markups and runaround that some of our competitors bake into the buying experience. On Facebook alone, 96% of 70 customers recommend us, and many of our first-time buyers are referrals. We offer courteous yet efficient customer service because we believe in what we do and are here for you every step of the way.

Here’s what our customer Mark shared with us about his buying and installing experience with Wilding Wallbeds, in March 2025: “Good product, good value. We had no problems figuring out how to put this bed kit together. It came out as expected and functioned well. If you want to DIY a Murphy bed this is the way to go. We cut and painted the pieces one day and put it together the next.”
