Murphy bed mattresses must be unique in one major way: they are designed to spend the vast majority of their life standing on-end inside of a Murphy bed cabinet. Most mattresses are only designed to lay flat, so when they are stood on-end night after night, slumping and sagging are likely to occur. In fact, most modern mattress manufacturers will void the warranty on their mattresses if they are used within a Murphy bed. Conversely, our mattresses are designed to stand on-end in a Murphy bed and even carry a 10-year warranty within any of our Murphy beds.
While any mattress that is no thicker than 12″ will fit in our Murphy beds, careful consideration should be made to ensure that you are investing in a mattress that can withstand life in a Murphy bed.
Good to Know
Did you know that mattress manufacturers will void the warranty on their mattresses if they are used in Murphy Beds? This is because being stored on-end is very likely to cause normal mattresses to slump and sag.
Yes. Murphy Beds need specially-designed mattresses. Importantly, Murphy Bed Mattresses, are still real mattresses (unlike a sofa sleeper, for example) they are just built to retain their shape when stored upright.
The mattress in a Murphy Bed does something that is unlike any other mattress: it stands vertically the vast majority of it’s life. This is something normal mattresses are simply not equipped to do.

No. One of the advantages of Murphy Beds is that they use real mattresses. This means you get to pick the mattress you want that will match the quality, comfort, and support you are looking for. For this reason, Murphy Beds do not include mattresses, but choosing which mattress you are going to use is an important part of the shopping process!
No, Murphy Beds do not require box springs. Murphy Beds are designed for mattresses to rest directly on a flat platform instead of relying on a frame with a box spring.
Maximum thickness varies by manufacturer. At Wilding Wallbeds, all of our beds allow for a 12″ mattress, but the industry standard is typically closer to 10″ or 11″.
